What a FUN morning we had to start off our Sea Animals unit!
We started our day with a reading of Eric Carle's "A House for Hermit Crab".
Then we explored Hermit Crab shells by pretending to be hermit crabs looking for the perfect shell.
As you can see, some were too small to hide from predators.
Others were just too big.
After the girls found their perfect shell, they decided that we should decorate them like the story.
They are always thinking of fun things I don't :)
So, we decorated them!
Their favorite game was to let me be the shark while they hid jumped inside their shells to hide!
This time was a ton of fun & fit lots of play into our learning.
After all of our pretending, we built the words "hermit crab"
which led to a little reading and writing!
Adelyn is doing a great job on her reading lessons!
While I did 1-on-1 instruction with Adelyn,
Charlotte did some writing practice, her word study sort & her CGI problem.
Adelyn didn't want to be 4 feet away while I worked with Charlotte,
so she sat next to Charlotte as she read and did her writing.
Whatever works - we're figuring it out!
Charlotte is done with her "reading lessons" in the 100 easy lessons, so now we just introduce a new book each day and read it together. Today, her new book was "Who took the Farmer's Hat?". Here's a video of her first read. After she's done, she gets to take the book to her room for independent reading whenever she wants!
We moved on to a non-fiction book about hermit crabs to learn a few additional facts.
Charlotte wrote a sentence afterward about hermit crabs while Adelyn colored a picture.
Charlotte's favorite fact was: "Hermit crabs have to keep their bodies wet because they breathe with gills". Her spelling: "Hermit crabs hav to kep there bodes wet bekuz tha breth with gilz."
This unit I've started a word wall to help her with content vocabulary spelling during her writing.
We included a bunch of words from our Eric Carle book with visuals.
Then, we took a couple of minutes to update our calendar!
Then, we talked about how hermit crabs have shells for protection.
We talked about how God is our protector. So, He is sort of like our shell :)
Charlotte reads Psalm 121 from her Bible.
Love-love-love this Bible. It's supposed to be written at a 3rd grade level, so there are still
plenty of words she can't sound out, but mostly it's perfect!
To finish the day, Charlotte did some copy work of Psalm 121:2.
We practiced drawing shells together on the whiteboard.
She drew and colored one on her sheet to remind her that God is like our shell.
That's all for today!
It's lunchtime :)
P.S. There may or may not have been singing and dancing to this song after lunch.
P.P.S My girls could not get enough today! We crafted post-naps.
We made a hermit crab that can pop in and out of its "shell".
Yay for pinterest ;)
